thai one on at anantara’s cooking schools

May 22nd, 2008

Located on the picturesque island of Koh Samui in Thailand, Anantara‘s cooking school puts a regional slant on its culinary tutorial. Those enrolled in its spa cuisine class better get a good night’s sleep, because guests are awake and on a bicycle by 6 am to start the day’s adventure. The chef will lead the group on a trek through Koh Samui’s spiritual countryside, culminating with a visit to the island’s largest Buddha statue. Next comes a breakfast at a ‘wat’ (meaning ‘temple’ in Thai) before heading back to the resort to freshen up and start cooking. In the afternoon, guests interpret their surroundings into food, learning to cook healthy yet flavorful Thai dishes that utilize local ingredients. After enjoying the fruits of their labor, guests are treated to an authentic Thai massage – perhaps a new ritual to continue back at home?

And just a one hour flight from Bangkok, the seaside Anantara Hua Hin‘s cooking program begins with a tour of the resort’s nursery and then continues onward to the local market. The excursion also includes a stop at a local coffee shop to get acquainted with Thai sweets. (The especially health-conscious can choose the Thai Spa Cuisine course in which guests bike to the local market and stock up on exotic tropical fruits and iced tea sourced from a local supplier.) Back at the hotel, guests are greeted with cold towels before settling into their lesson with a master chef.
