just outside paris

July 13th, 2010

Tired of the Louvre? Sick of the Seine? Hop on a train and get out of Paris for some delightful day trips.

Versailles

Check out the palace where Marie-Antoinette hosted elegant balls and walk around the grounds to her Petit Trianon, where she lived like a royal farm girl.

Giverny

While l’Orangerie and Musée Marmottan in Paris give you a glimpse of Monet’s enchanting home, taking the train to Giverny and exploring his garden first-hand is worth the trip out of Paris. Walk across the Japanese bridge and see the beautiful water lilies that span Monet’s iconic canvases.

Maison Cocteau

Jean Cocteau’s country house just opened outside of Paris. Browse the Milly-La-Forêt home of the eccentric artist, recently restored, and take in the unique furnishings, such as the leopard skin pattern covering the walls, furniture, and lampshades of his study.

When you venture back to Paris, duck into the cozy and chic Pavillon de la Reine and watch the streetlamps light up around the Place des Vosges.
