5 Favorite Indulgent Accommodations Around the Globe

A room with a view is always nice. But the world’s most indulgent accommodations go beyond sweeping vistas to offer sumptuous interiors, next-level service, and a dash of the unexpected—from a romantic open-air treehouse in Kruger National Park to a butler-serviced private riad in Marrakech complete with lavish rooftop terrace and home cinema. Take a peek inside:

Grand Riad at Royal Mansour

A four-bedroom oasis spread across three floors, this “medina within a medina” offers palatial-style design, private butler service, and a terracotta roof terrace inlaid with mosaics and offering sweeping views of the Atlas Mountain. Interiors are a vision of stucco lace, heavy drapery, Murano chandeliers, and a riotous mix of colorful wallpaper and precious stones. The ground floor opens onto a private garden with a retractable roof, while a cast iron elevator whisks you to the floors above, where each of the bedrooms has dressing rooms and private bathrooms. Other spaces include a dining room with billiards, a library for artful lounging, a neoclassical-style dining room, and the roof terrace with a plunge pool, Bedouin tent, and hammam.

Private Reserve at Gili Lankanfushi

A Robinson Crusoe fantasy come to life, the Private Reserve at Gili Lankanfushi is the world’s largest overwater villa, stretching across the Indian Ocean in multi-level tiers. Guests spend their days lounging by the infinity-edge pool and in the overwater catamaran nets; working out in the air-conditioned gym; pampering themselves with treatments at the private couples’ spa (complete with a steam room and indoor/outdoor treatment rooms); and sliding down the top-deck waterslide into turquoise waters. By night, enjoy movie screenings at the private cinema, and retire in the guestrooms (of which there are two en suite master bedrooms and a guest suite), which have doors that open to the breathtaking scenery. Other perks of the Private Reserve include a fully-equipped kitchen and the option to curate your own wine selection from the 400-label cellar.

Ian Fleming Villa at GoldenEye

Situated within the GoldenEye resort, this villa is tucked away in a private garden, where it’s hidden by tall trees and tropical foliage. It’s here that acclaimed British novelist Ian Fleming wrote all 14 James Bond books, inspired by the lush scenery and the three-bedroom villa he designed to his own specifications. A dedicated butler is on hand to make your every wish a reality, while a chef can whip up Jamaican specialties and martinis (shaken, never stirred) to be enjoyed in outdoor settings like a sunken garden or on the private beach, where there’s a grill built into the side of a rocky cliff. Each of the villa’s three bedrooms has its own tropical garden area with a clawfoot tub and a garden shower, setting the scene for relaxation en plein air. There are also two private stand-alone one-bedroom cottages on site for larger groups or families.

Producer Suite at The Chatwal New York

Guests of the Producer Suite will feel they’ve traveled back in time to New York’s heyday. Designed by French architect Thierry Despont, the expansive suite harks back to the city’s Art Deco past with its bold colors, geometric shapes, and a spiral staircase that spans two floors, leading to a panoramic roof terrace with views spanning over west 44th street and Manhattan’s skyline. Stretch out on a lounger enjoying the vistas of the city’s most iconic landmarks, and order room service for the ultimate New York power lunch. Butler services ensures you won’t have to lift a finger.

andBeyond Ngala Treehouse

It’s impossible not to feel a sense of child-like wonder as you sleep under the stars at the Ngala Treehouse, surrounded by the wilds of Kruger National Park. The four-floor treehouse offers the ultimate thrill—of being one with nature—while drifting off to the sights and sounds of the forest, far from the distraction of civilization. Enjoy sundowner drinks and a starlit dinner picnic on the upper deck, then retire to the elevated sleep-out platform for sleeping outdoors under a retractable screen (there’s also a covered and weatherproof space should you want to move indoors). And just because you’re off the grid doesn’t mean you have to go without the conveniences of a hot shower or a flushing toilet. Talk about the best of both worlds!

The Chatwal Launches an Exclusive Work-From-Hotel Package

A playground for New York’s creative set, the Theater District has long been a source of endless inspiration for residents and visitors alike. AM/PM NEWS #4: Inspired by Travel News and Culture Trends

Discovery Channel’s ‘Shark Week’ will turn 33 next month and if 45 hours of programming is sufficient to entice you for an enthralling trip, opt for Belmond’s brand-new offer in Cape Town with a shark scientist. As many Americans are dusting off their passports, we have compiled a list of summer destinations from the Caribbean and Mexico to Europe before work-from-hotel is no longer an option. And for when you are ready to travel with the extended family, we have the choice in Marrakech, ready to meet all expectations by all ages. More than ever, nostalgia is a significant element in entertainment (shout-out to fellow fans of Cobra Kai, The Mighty Ducks and Gilmore Girls) and there are some similarities in travel, especially on the heels of the past year. One of our beloved travel icons, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, is back on track and with more itinerary options than before. Maybe it is this heatwave in New York City, but we are already thinking about ski trips and as Switzerland welcomes Americans, Zermatt stands out with its 300-day bluebird conditions.

Marine biologist for the day:

Mount Nelson, a Belmond hotel in Cape Town, now offers an exclusive, private experience with shark scientist Justin Blake. Conservation-minded adults and kids as young as eight years old can partake in the ocean boating and snorkeling expedition to explore the Cape kelp forests, featured in Oscar-winner ‘My Octopus Teacher’ and recently named one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Lucky adventurers might spot an octopus and even hear a tagged shark. Maximum capacity is six guests at $265 per person; double-occupancy at $700 per person.

Last hurrah for remote work:

As offices are reopening, the next two months might just be the last chance for fully-remote office hours. Even though we have invested in our standing desks, striking plants and library-inspired bookshelves in our apartments/houses, it is hard to beat an ‘office’ inside a luxury hotel. Some of our favorite options include: Cap Juluca on the pristine Maundays Bay of Anguilla; Nayara Tented Camp in Costa Rica where hot spring-fed pools are dotted amidst the lush rainforest; La Reserve Paris overlooking the sparkling cityscape; Splendido Mare surrounded by the refreshing scents of Portofino’s orange blossoms; Dromoland Castle in Ireland with a walled garden by the very designer behind the gardens of Versailles; Paradero Todos Santos situated within the Le Mesa farming community; and Ian Fleming’s original five-bedroom home in JamaicaWe can share the latest and greatest on travel regulations to these destinations.

This three-story riad will not disappoint in-laws:

Thinking about an extended family holiday? Opt for the four-bedroom Grand Riad at Royal Mansour in Marrakech. The nearly 20,000-square-foot residence features a private library, two swimming pools with built-in water current, cinema, hammam, gym, multiple dining and living rooms, and a glass-enclosed split-level terrace with a retractable roof. With a private entrance, the Grand Riad feels more like a private home than a hotel. No detail is overlooked thanks to a dedicated staff, including a chef, watchman, housekeepers, and butlers.

Nostalgic about train travel?

Evoking the Golden Age of glamour, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express by Belmond expands its immersive, slow travel experiences across Europe with five new boarding points in Rome, Florence, Geneva, Brussels and Amsterdam. Aboard the train’s restored Art Deco carriages, guests will be whisked along one-night journeys from Florence and Rome, passing the Italian lakes and snowy Swiss mountains, before arriving in Paris. Wind through the Brenner Pass as the train crosses from Geneva to Venice or take off on a grand tour of three European Capital cities – Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam – during a Venice to Amsterdam itinerary.

Zermatt by the numbers for skiers:

Switzerland is the birthplace of ski tourism and home to Europe’s largest glaciers. Skiing is available 365 days a year in Zermatt and the destination has over 300 days of sunshine. There are more than 220 miles of ski runs for all levels and the area around the Matterhorn has pistes up to 12,700+ feet above sea level – the tallest in Europe. With 54 ski lifts, Zermatt will unveil a new one this year that will complete an ‘Alpine crossing’ by connecting the Klein Matterhorn to Testa Grigia in Italy’s Aosta Valley for the first time. Designed in an Alpine-chalet style, Schweizerhof is situated on the main thoroughfare of Bahnhofstrasse at the base of the Matterhorn. Oak walls and marble bathrooms create a cozy yet contemporary environment while fun touches like wooden hiking sticks, cow bells, and comforters emblazoned with the Matterhorn lend a sense of place. The Kid’s Club has everything a child could dream of: Arcade games? Check. Climbing wall? Check. Movie nights? Check. Sports gear is available to rent and an in-house ski expert can assist first-timers.

Morocco Now Open

As of June 15, 2021, Morocco reopened to U.S and Canadian citizens. Morocco announced a two-tiered system, classifying countries into “List A,” including the U.S. and Canada, and “List B” with different entry requirements for each list. Travelers from ‘A’ countries are now welcome as long as they submit a negative PCR test administered within 48 hours of arrival or proof of vaccination.

When planning the next trip, look no further than the King of Morocco’s own hotel, Royal Mansour Marrakech. The palatial estate has long been the destination for travelers seeking privacy within the medina walls while also enjoying quick access to the city’s cultural icons from the Majorelle Gardens to Jemaa el-Fnaa. Guests are welcomed with an open-air courtyard, over seven acres of lush gardens and 53 private multi-story riads dotted along petal-pink pathways. No elevators; no carts; no rooms; no crowds. With recently extended gardens and wellbeing programming, here’s what’s new and noteworthy at Royal Mansour Marrakech.

What’s New

Garden Party: Royal Mansour recently debuted a private dining space elevated 14 feet above the property’s newly expanded gardens. Aptly titled The Nest, the 430-square-foot open-air dining space is an extension of the property’s poolside restaurant, Le Jardin, featuring a Mediterranean and Asian-fusion menu by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno. Nestled within the lemon and palm trees, The Nest offers a hidden sanctuary for up to eight guests with uninterrupted views over Marrakech and the Koutoubia Mosque’s Atlas tower. Each dining experience is completely customizable as the team works with guests to finalize curated playlists, floral arrangements, and exclusive menus.

Retreat to the Spa: Accessed through a private citrus grove, the three-story, 27,000-square-foot spa features an elaborate white birdcage atrium welcoming guests and locals alike. This September, Royal Mansour Marrakech is launching new multi-day wellness retreats, marking a new era for the property as a global wellness destination. Available as three-, five-, seven- or 14-day retreats, guests can choose between the Rebalance, Rejuvenation, Immunity Boost, and Weight Control programs – with the goal of improving both mental and physical health. Each program is completely customizable and offers a 360-degree approach with treatments, nutrition (eating healthy but well at the property’s four restaurants led by Michelin-starred chefs), and activities including private cooking classes and Pilates.

Wellbeing Through Art: Surrounded by the quiet serenity of the property’s gardens, Royal Mansour has also designated a new artist’s studio, Atelier d’Artiste, housed in a glass-paneled greenhouse, to host art therapy sessions including painting, modeling, pottery, and calligraphy, each beginning with a guided meditation. Available a la carte or as part of the multi-day wellness retreats, guests will choose between private, couples, or family sessions with the resident expert. The two-hour creative workshops aim to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and encourage self-reflection through the act of learning a new skill.

Where Italy Meets Morocco

For a taste of Italy in Marrakech, Sesamo is an Italian dining concept orchestrated by noted Chef Massimiliano Alajmo, whose family-owned group of restaurants in Italy has earned a total of five Michelin stars. In fact, Chef Massimiliano is the youngest chef to be awarded three Michelin stars (at age 28) and his restaurant in Italy, La Calendre, is consistently ranked as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.  Combining his Italian roots and locally sourced Moroccan ingredients, he has crafted new dishes, including garlic and red pepper spaghetti with vegetables from Royal Mansour’s gardens, for the menu, in addition to signature offerings from La Calendre. This marks his first partnership with a hotel.

A Hotel Within a Hotel

Privacy is the trend that is here to stay, and each of Royal Mansour’s accommodations is an individual, three-story riad with a private entrance. The four-bedroom Grand Riad is the undisputed crown jewel. Referred to as the “hotel within the hotel,” the 19,375 square-foot residence features a private library, two swimming pools, a cinema, hammam, gym, multiple dining and living rooms and a glass-enclosed split-level terrace with a retractable roof. Guests of the Grand Riad also enjoy the services of a dedicated staff that includes a chef, watchman, housekeepers and butlers as well as a private driveway entrance to the property.

Experiences in the Red City:

Scents of Marrakech: Not open to the public, guests of Royal Mansour are granted exclusive access to acclaimed French perfumer Serge Lutens’ 2.5-acre Marrakech home and laboratory. Built by combining 60 riads, the space took almost 30 years to design with its intricately carved ceilings, locally inspired stained-glass windows and seemingly endless succession of plush sitting rooms. The experience begins with a ride through the Medina in a vintage motorcycle sidecar before arriving at the Serge Lutens estate for a private tour. No photos are allowed inside making this a trip guests truly need to see to believe.

Marrakech Two Ways: Escape the city for an overnight experience in the Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world. Flying over the Atlas Mountains, the journey takes guests into the Chigaga dunes, considered by many to be the largest and still untouched dunes in Morocco. Guided through the desert and over the dunes, lunch is served in the midst of the Zagora palm grove. After a camel ride to camp, guests will watch the sunset before sitting down around a campfire for live music and dinner under the night sky with local Toureg guides.

How To Get There: There are currently direct flights from Washington D.C., New York, and Montreal to Casablanca. Travelers can then opt for a quick connecting flight into Marrakech or arrange a private car transfer with Royal Mansour – complete with complimentary WIFI for the two-hour drive. The arrival is seamless as guests of the hotel are met as they step off the plane and are guided through the airport, assisting with customs and side-stepping any long lines along the way.

Kalesma Mykonos opens today! May 20, 2021

Kalesma Mykonos opens today! May 20, 2021

The suite- and villa-only hotel is now welcoming its first guests

Kalesma Mykonos opens today, inviting guests to experience authentic Mykonian hospitality in style. The property sits atop a hillside overlooking Ornos bay, each suite offering an unobstructed water view. Reception is at the pinnacle – stylishly decorated with Rick Owens furniture – along with the restaurant, Pere Ubu. From here, guests can catch both the sunrise and the sunset, with the aroma of freshly baking bread constantly hanging in the air. (A local baker will be making bread in the property’s brick oven throughout the day.)

The 25 suites and two villas all have a private deck with a full-sized pool overlooking the Aegean Sea. Greek designers K-Studio (the architect behind the new Mykonos Airport) and Vangelis Bonios of Studio Bonarchi have used local materials such as wood, marble, stone and osier to give a contemporary look to traditional Cycladic style. The cool earth tones like taupe, grey, dark brown and charcoal blend together with white-washed surfaces and bougainvillea-filled archways to give a strong sense of place and to allow the brilliant blue of the Aegean Sea to stand out. The suites stand out with their thoughtful touches such as the night blooming jasmine planted outside each suite perfuming the evening air, the TVs that seemingly disappear out of view, and the custom artwork by Serbian artist Aleksander Vak.

At 680 sq. ft., the suites accommodate up to three adults, or two adults and two children. Each will feature private 970 sq. ft. terraces. Kalesma’s two- and three-bedroom villas can be rented together to sleep larger groups. At 2,600 sq. ft. each, both villas will have an open-plan living room with separate dining areas, a fully equipped kitchen with a pre-stocked refrigerator, wine fridge and private chef available upon request. Additional amenities will include a private gym and 24/7 butler service. Guests can also book in-room spa treatments.

For a truly unique vantage point, guests can venture up to Pere Ubu which offers locally sourced Cycladic specialties such as cheese saganaki with three local cheeses, spicy honey, thyme and roasted almonds and toasted octopus with sun dried tomatoes and olives. While offering international wines, the wine list places an emphasis on Greek wines such as Assyrtiko from Santorini, rosé from the Peloponnese, and orange wine (a very popular style in Greece). The signature cocktail, the Mediterraneo, is made with Greek Mastiha – a unique liqueur from Mastiha trees found only on the island Chios – infused with thyme and lime. The restaurant embodies Kalesma’s community ethos with nightly sunset celebrations, evening DJ entertainment and weekly culinary events like intimate dinners exclusively for Kalesma’s guests. All are encouraged to partake in the lighthearted island lifestyle over dinner – and plenty of wine – before sleeping soundly just down the hill.

Known for their hotspots in Athens – Sea Spice, Pere, and Ubu – the seasoned trio behind Kalesma are all local to the island; the land has been in one of the owner’s family for over 100 years.

While Mykonos is known for its social life, Kalesma invites guests to see the full picture of the island – from its mythological history (the hotel sits where Apollo is said to have kept his horses) to its Venetian town and artisan shops. Though they can certainly recommend the most fun beaches to see and be seen, the concierge team can also suggest hidden coves off-the-beaten track or a private yacht charter to nearby Delos, considered the most sacred of all islands in antiquity.

It’s been said that there are as many churches on Mykonos as there are local families, and a quick scan of the white-washed skyline underscores the anecdote. The abundance is largely due to the number of ancestral churches built on private property. Kalesma’s own chapel can serve as a picturesque backdrop for weddings.

There are flights to Athens from several US cities including New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia and from Athens it’s just a 40-minute flight or a 2.5-hour high speed ferry to Mykonos.

Suite rates begin at €1,200 and villas at €3,500 per night

a mexico vacation for every traveler

A welcome respite from the winter weather, Mexico also offers an abundance of beaches, cultural offerings and culinary adventures. Whether for a weekend or an extended stay, we’ve rounded up three destinations for travelers looking for a private Mexico getaway.

For an outdoor adventure: Todos Santos

Pablo Carmona and Josh Kremer, Mexican entrepreneurs and financiers, are making their mark with Mexico’s first luxury soft adventure brand, Paradero Hotels, on February 1, 2021. One-hour away from San José del Cabo Airport, Paradero Todos Santos has a barefoot, bohemian vibe and is a haven for surfers and outdoor enthusiasts. Overseen by Mexico City-based POLEN, who was behind the landscape design of Google and Twitter offices in Mexico, Paradero Todos Santos is an 80 percent landscape, 20 percent construction project. 35 suites are situated within the Le Mesa farming community and an agricultural area comprising more than a dozen family-owned farms. Details with a sense of place include: on-site 100,000-sq.ft. botanical garden with 60 endemic species; artisan-made furniture from Mexico; suspended ‘star nets’ that offer high-altitude views of the surrounding farmlands, mountains and ocean; below-ground spa that is inspired by a secret watering hole in Todos Santos; and an open-fire kitchen with a traditional Oaxacan clay oven.

For a beach escape: Riviera Maya

With buildings handcrafted by Mayan masons, traditional Temazcal treatments on the menu, and one of the world’s longest barrier reefs just 10-minutes away, Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa is a true Mexican escape. Days are spent on white sand beaches while nights are best enjoyed over a private dinner in the observation tower. Highlights include the Kinan Spa which offers a variety of wellness programming pulling from its Mayan surroundings as well as honey-based spa treatments thanks to the on-site apiary, and the new ‘Noches de Cantina’ dining experience centered on the ritual of savoring tequila, inspired by Mexico City’s popularization of cantinas in the 1950s. With Belmond’s new ‘Exclusive Places’ offer, families and small groups can enjoy secluded accommodations among the 200 acres of lush jungle. Casa Leo and Casa Aries, each consisting of four suites, feature four plunge pools, private access to the beach and two private palapa spa areas for in-room treatments.

For a cultural celebration: San Miguel de Allende

2021 marks the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s autonomy from Spain with San Miguel de Allende the first town to receive independence. Housed across six historic casonas, or residences, Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is a 37-room retreat in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. Each casona has been carefully restored with local, handcrafted items, ranging from the wooden headboards, exclusive artworks, or antique tapestries. The buildings include a former convent, a 17-century fort and the former residence of the Archbishop of San Miguel de Allende, connected by courtyards, cloisters and the city streets. Now, families and small groups can enjoy an entire 17th-century casona to themselves – complete with butler and dining service. Spend the day at the Sazón cooking school with private tours of local markets and mastering Mexican specialties including salmon crudo and. Celebrate the city’s rich artistic past at the Artist Corner perusing the mini-gallery or partaking in a workshop to craft your own masterpiece.

How to Get There: Land travel is not permitted through February 21, 2021, but air travel is open. Direct flights to Mexico City, Cabo and Cancun are available from major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Houston, Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Miami. Belmond has rolled out a selection of value-add offers for private jet travelers. They are collaborating with myriad companies and the list includes but is not limited to Jet Linx, Nicholas Air, Silver Air, TradeWind, Private Jet Service, FlyExclusive, and PRVT. Upon arrival, travelers will need to complete health declaration forms and undergo health screenings, including temperature checks.

top hotel accommodations around the world

From an experiential work of art in London to the nearly 20,000-square-foot hotel-within-a-hotel in Marrakech, these top suites, villas and standalone accommodations offer the best in amenities, design and privacy around the world.

TOP SUITES

A one-bedroom sculpture, a baby grand piano, the former residence of the last High King of Ireland – there is no stone left unturned in these top suites.

ROOM at The Beaumont

The Beaumont in London is home to Turner Prize-winner Antony Gormley’s inhabitable sculpture called ROOM. Designed as an experiential work of art, the exterior takes the shape of a three-story crouching man made of stainless-steel – an answer to the City of Westminster’s requirement that new buildings contain public art. The one-bedroom suite is a dark space entirely clad in fumed-oak, featuring only a single, all-white bed and can be taken to pitch black darkness and silence at the flip of a switch. The heavily insulated walls create an extremely quiet inside, free from the sounds of the city, and there is a window high up where guests can see the night sky but no surrounding buildings as Gormley wanted views to be unencumbered. There is nothing in the room other than the bed – no TV, minibar, artwork or telephone – so there are no distractions.

Tokyo Suite at Park Hyatt Tokyo

50 floors above Tokyo’s restless streets, Park Hyatt Tokyo’s residence-like Tokyo Suite has floor-to-ceiling views of the city’s skyline from almost every room, with Japan’s highest mountain, Mt. Fuji, peaking up in the distance. Decorated with the aura of a private apartment, this 2,368-square-foot accommodation is adorned with a Miao headdress and washi lanterns by Isamu Noguchi, designer and creator of The Noguchi Museum in New York. From the baby grand piano in the living room to the library collection of 1,000 books on the arts, this suite is a quiet and comfortable escape from bustle below.

Eden Suite at La Réserve Eden au Lac

Located on the third floor of La Réserve Eden au Lac, the Eden Suite debuted earlier this year as part of two-year restoration project helmed by Philippe Starck. The Eden Suite features glass walls separating the living area from the bathroom with natural light pouring in from the large windows and four balconies with charming ironwork. As the only luxury hotel on Lac Zurich, the suite offers sweeping views to allow guests to admire the boats and the Alps in the distance. Taking inspiration from the location, Starck wanted to give guests the feeling of being on a yacht. He lent his signature contemporary touch with neutral tones and sleek metal accents, while honoring the building’s historical elements. Quirky nautical touches include wooden oars, paintings of sailboats and room numbers printed as if they were on a racing sail.

Brian Boru Suite at Dromoland Castle

Named for one of the last High Kings of Ireland and member of the O’Brien family who founded the Castle in the 16th century, the Brian Boru Suite at Dromoland Castle has a bedroom and sitting room overlooking the property’s lake. The bedroom’s canopy bed, sparkling chandelier, and separate dressing room evoke the Castle’s royal heritage, activities like falconry and pony and trap rides celebrate its history and the 18-hole golf course with a flood-lit driving range embrace modern technology.

TOP STANDALONE ACCOMMODATIONS

For those looking for extra privacy and added space, these standalone accommodations – villas, casas and riads – offer private entrances, plenty of outdoor space and even their own dedicated staff.

Grand Riad at Royal Mansour

Of Royal Mansour’s 53 individual three-story accommodations, the four-bedroom Grand Riad is the undisputed crown jewel. Referred to as the “hotel within the hotel,” the nearly 20,000-square-foot residence features a private library, two swimming pools with built-in water current, a cinema, hammam, gym, multiple dining and living rooms, and a glass-enclosed split-level terrace with a retractable roof. With a private resort entrance, the Grand Riad feels more like a private home than a hotel. No detail is overlooked thanks in large part to a dedicated staff that includes a chef, watchman, housekeepers, and butlers.

Casa do Lago at UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa

UXUA just launched a new casa, Casa do Lago, where not a single tree was cut to create the new accommodation. The house reimagines an old fisherman home and its colonial Brazilian style with reclaimed materials, such as wood sourced from an abandoned plantation, and a modern eye. Wilbert Das, founder of UXUA and former creative director of Diesel, filled the casa with Brazilian art, antiques, and custom pieces from the UXUA DAS furniture collection. The defining feature of this casa is a lake surrounded by rainforest and preserved with modern technology to be sustainable and healthy. The mineral-rich water is home to rare fish species and is a perfect place to swim. The casa is just a short walk from the historic Quadrado of Trancoso but feels like its own tropical universe, celebrating indoor/outdoor living.

Stella Maris at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

Out of the 121 villas, Stella Maris is a standout option at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi – accessible only by traditional dhoni boat. The nearly 6,000-square-feet duplex accommodation features an infinity pool, overwater hammocks with direct access to the ocean, and a BBQ station that is available for private chef service. The ‘smart villa’ (with every light, aircon, and curtain controlled from one central iPad) is stocked with still and sparkling water produced at the property’s onsite bottling plant. Laid-back island style is juxtaposed with modern design elements – from a sleek spiral staircase to a bathroom decked out in black-and-white stripes from head to toe. With an ambiance inspired by the Maldivian night sky, the layout offers stargazing opportunities from various points around the villa, allowing guests to spot both northern and southern hemisphere constellations from a different spot every night.

Fleming Villa at GoldenEye

Channel Ian Fleming in celebration of the 25th James Bond movie, No Time to Die, in the aptly named, five-bedroom Fleming Villa at GoldenEye in Jamaica, where he penned all 14 James Bond novels. Today, his writing desk still remains. The main bedroom looks onto his sunken garden, where he entertained the likes of Kathryn Hepburn and Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden. Guests have access to his private beach and can snorkel in his beloved reef. The grounds also feature a private screening room in what was Fleming’s former garage.

andBeyond Ngala Treehouse at andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge and andBeyond Ngala Tented Camp

Three miles away from the nearest lodge and 39 feet in the air is the new andBeyond Ngala Treehouse. The completely private, four-level accommodation – surrounded by nothing but the South African bush – opened in February 2020 as a new accommodation at andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge and andBeyond Ngala Tented Camp. Fully solar-powered, the treehouse has a rooftop deck with an outdoor bed and lounge for al fresco sundowners and dinner for two, an indoor bedroom, and a full bathroom with an outdoor shower – all with uninterrupted views of the bush below. Couples pack up just what they need for the night and are escorted on a game drive to the treehouse for an unforgettable sleepover, complete with a stocked bar and jars of midnight snacks. Surrounded by a thorn boma fence and just a phone call away from the dedicated treehouse attendant, travelers can feel safe in this otherwise intimidating setting.

Palazzo Vendramin at Belmond Hotel Cipriani

private pools at hotels around the world

Hotels with Stunning Views, Even from the (Private) Swimming Pools

Spotting wildlife, gazing at constellations, sipping chilled rosé, cooling off from the desert heat – these are all activities best enjoyed from a plunge pool. A private place to take a dip is a deal-breaking amenity for many when hitting ‘book,’ especially heading into this new world of travel. In fact, luxury travel advisor network, Virtuoso, says that it’s been one of the most requested in-room features from their clients in recent months.

Here are our favorite places around the world to float.

Views of Ocean

Maldives: For those looking to travel as far away from home as possible (we don’t blame you!) Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi awaits. The property opened on July 1, 2019 as the first luxury resort near the capital city of Malé in the last decade – making for a quick and seamless yacht ride from the airport anytime, day or night. Every single villa on the island – whether on the beach, reef, or stilted over the ocean – is equipped with a private infinity pool, dining gazebo, and an outdoor deck with a swinging daybed. Guests staying in a Stella Maris overwater villa can take a traditional dhoni boat straight to their pool and spend the night gazing at both southern and northern hemispheres stars.

Anguilla: Situated in a secluded are of the newly-renovated resort, the multi-story Beachfront Pool Villas at Belmond Cap Juluca have private swimming pools just steps away from the white sands of Maundays Bay. Guests can sway to a private, in-villa reggae concert from the comfort of their own pool float.

St. Barth: New four-bedroom villas at The Christopher, designed by Olivia Putman (daughter of Andrée Putman) blur the boundaries between inside and out and use a mix of natural materials including bamboo, sandstone and volcanic stone, accented with pops of the hotel’s signature orange. With large decks and private pools, they meld the privacy of a villa rental with the comforts of a hotel.

Mykonos: Once home to Greek gods and a favorite destination of Jackie Kennedy as well as artists, poets, designers and actors, Mykonos has long been in the spotlight. But the whole story of the island is rarely told. Enter Kalesma, opening in Spring 2021. Set on a hilltop above Ornos Bay and just under two miles from Mykonos town, Kalesma’s 25 accommodations will be spread across five acres and set against a lush hillside blanketed with 20,000 plants. All suites will offer unobstructed lookouts from the private patio, as well as a full-sized personal heated pool.

Côte d’Azur: La Réserve Ramatuelle is nestled within a cliffside jardin overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Just 15 minutes outside St. Tropez, the property feels like a well-kept secret. Each of the 14 villas comes with its own private garden and pool. The three-bedroom Villa No. 2 has 22,000 square-feet of gardens with unbeatable views of the Mediterranean Sea. Wall-to-wall windows open to the outside, seamlessly blending indoors with outdoors, where an al fresco dining and entertaining area and a private infinity pool and Jacuzzi overlook Cap Taillat.
