Of course you know that John Legend proposed to Chrissy Teigen in the Maldives, but do you know at what resort?  It is no secret that the island nations of the Maldives, taking the #27 spot on The New York Times’ “45 Places to Go in 2012” list, is a hotbed for celebrities. But with over 80 different resorts throughout the necklace of islands, where are they all hiding?

Well, we’ve spotted supermodel Chrissy Teigen with R&B musician John Legend, soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo, tennis champion Roger Federer, and British bombshell Jenny Frost all at the luxurious Anantara Kihavah Villas. Whether they spent their time relaxing on the white-sand beaches, picking up a few tips from a cooking class at Salt, sipping on some bubbly at the underwater restaurant, Sea, or popping the question à la John Legend, it is clear that this resort is hot on the celebrity circuit! Whether you are a star or starlet, or just like to pretend that you are, all guests of Anantara Kihavah Villas receive five-star treatment.

where will you go in 2012?

It’s that time of the year again… time for lists. To-do’s, resolutions, and the New York Times 45 Places to Go in 2012, of course. So, if you’re resolved to travel more this year, use this to check a few things off your list. Here are some of our favorites!

#3 Myanmar – After the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from 15 years of house arrest and the lifting of the boycott against the authoritarian regime that kept the country isolated, Myanmar is ready to share cultural treasures and deserted beaches. Experience the remarkable beauty, romance, and mystery of Myanmar aboard the luxurious Orient-Express’ “Road to Mandalay” as it cruises down the Ayeyarwady River.

#4 London – Between the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Queen’s 60th year on the throne, the summer Olympic Games, and the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens, there is a bevy of reasons to visit London this year. For the ultimate posh location, we recommend the Metropolitan London with its incredible views of Hyde Park and award-winning Nobu restaurant. For a more sanctuary-like hotel, the 5-star Halkin in discreet Belgravia may be more up your alley.

#6 Tokyo – It’s no secret that Tokyo had a tough 2011, which is why there is no better time to travel there than 2012. Due to a decrease in tourism and business travel, rates are down without sacrificing luxury and attention to detail. Staying at the “Lost in Translation”  Park Hyatt Tokyo is now better than ever.

#11 Moscow – For those who love history and art, this is the city to visit. Between the reopening of the extravagantly renovated Bolshoi Theater in October and the opening of the Russian Icon Museum, you will find no shortage of things to do here. Located just yards away from the Bolshoi Theater, the five-star Ararat Park Hyatt Moscow is in the prime location to explore this unique city.

#14 San Diego – If you’re looking for good times, good people, and great beer, San Diego should definitely be on your list of places to go this year. If you want to throw in a game of golf before or after your tastings, definitely stay at the Park Hyatt Aviara.

#27 Maldives – It seems that everyone is traveling to the Maldives now-a-days, and it’s no secret why. It’s necklace of 26 tropical atolls in the Indian Ocean make it a place where you can find something that everyone in the family wants to do – scuba dive, fish, surf, or just relax in the pristine sand. There are so many different resorts to choose from – here are our favorites: Park Hyatt Maldives, Anatara Dhigu Resorts & Spas, Anantara Veli Resorts & Spas, Anantara Kihavah Villas, Naladhu, and Cocoa Island.

If you like to “kill two birds with one stone”, you’ll need to check out Crystal Cruises. Their ships plan to drop anchor in each of these destinations in 2012: #1 Panama City; #22 Paraty, Brazil; and #36 Dubrovnik, Croatia.

anantara scores a hat trick!

January 6th, 2012

While they may be far from any hockey rink, Anantara Resorts has still managed to score a “hat trick” in the Maldives! They have proudly achieved Green Globe Certification for three of its resorts – Anantara Dhigu Resort & Spa, Anantara Veli Resort & Spa, and Anantara Kihavah Villas. This recognition highlights Anantara’s sincere commitment to operating in an environmentally, socially and culturally responsible manner through a broad spectrum of initiatives in the Maldives, and is proudly the first operator in the Maldives to have all of its resorts Green Globe Certified.

Anantara’s Maldives resorts incorporate all aspects of Green Globe standards in their daily operation, primarily in environmental conservation such as water, energy, and waste management efficiency. The resorts also support their local communities and environments and promote the islands’ social and cultural heritage through resort and local island experiences.

Baa Atoll, the capital of the Maldives, is also recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO for its conservation, research, and development of their rich coral reef systems. With this, UNESCO acknowledges Baa Atoll’s “great potential for demonstrating sustainable development throughout the Maldives and the region, while relying on a green economy.”

a new kind of adoption

July 27th, 2011

You’ve heard of pet adoption, but have you heard of coral adoption?! Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas know that coral reefs are much more than just snorkeling spectacles. In fact, the Maldives’ Baa Atoll region is full of coral that helps protect the pristine beaches at Anantara Kihavah Villas and guard Kihavah Huravalhi Island’s crystal blue lagoon, as well as also supporting an astounding array of tropical fish and other sea creatures. However, coral is a fragile organism and vulnerable to extreme weather and sudden environmental changes. To ensure countless beach vacations in the future and more importantly, the health of our world’s oceans, Anantara Kihavah Villas has started a coral adoption program. During the construction of the villas, the resident marine biologist created coral gardens and attached coral to iron frames to promote the flow of water and nutrients and to encourage coral to grow faster than it would naturally. Guests at the resort can now contribute to on-going reef conservation by adopting one of these coral frames from the resort’s website. By purchasing a small frame at $100, a medium frame at $200, or a large frame at $400, you can help save our oceans!

nothing ‘minor’ about it

June 8th, 2011

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas founder and CEO Bill Heinecke knows it’s better to give than to receive.  Every year for his birthday, Anantara properties around the world give back to their local communities through a number of charitable outreach programs. This year, the annual Minor Founder’s Day celebrations during the first week in June included the release of 50 sea turtles into the wild at Anantara Seminyak in Bali, an elephant meet-and-greet and tree planting event at Anantara Golden Triangle in Thailand, and an Eye Camp for local residents at Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Maldives (including donations of glasses for those in need).

Kind of puts that pony we asked for in perspective!

kihavah-bunga, dude!

May 17th, 2011

Five-star resort. Secluded island with a hard-to-pronounce name (Kihavah Huravalhi). Cerulean Indian Ocean waves.

You may have heard rumblings of the newest Anantara property in the Maldives, but now the all-villa resort (many of which have palm trees growing right through them) is awaiting your arrival. And so is your personal butler.

Only a 35-minute seaplane ride from Malé, Anantara Kihavah Villas offers 78 overwater and beachfront villas with private infinity pools, sundecks, outdoor showers, and soaking tubs built for two.

The Maldives are home to more than 300 species of fish, and you’ll never run out of opportunities to spot them: the overwater villas boast glass-bottomed bathtubs, the spas have viewing panels under the treatments beds and the signature four-level restaurant Sea.Fire.Salt.Sky sports an underwater dining room. When you’re ready to get up close and personal with the marine life, water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving and windsurfing are offered through the experience club, ‘Elements Kihavah’. Sail into the sunset on a private yacht, cruise on a catamaran, or go deep-sea fishing using the age-old stargazing method.

Haven’t mastered the flip turn yet? No worries—the resort boasts the longest swimming pool in the Maldives at a whopping 160 feet, so you won’t be fighting spring break-ers. Poolside, Sunshine butlers are on hand with fresh fruit and cool face towels. Alternately, enjoy a rejuvenating treat with a day at the Anantara Spa, with treatments featuring indigenous ingredients like the Maldivian Massage’s coconut scrub.

Your piece of paradise awaits…

Rates:  Best available rates start at $1,170 per night for a Beach Pool Villa and include daily breakfast for two.
