Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, would have celebrated his 103rd birthday on May 28 (had he not passed away in 1964). After a WWII mission brought him to the Caribbean, Fleming returned to “paradise on earth” and built his dream villa, GoldenEye.
While we can’t all spend the rest of our days soaking in the Jamaican sun like Commander Fleming did (although we wish we could), why not celebrate his birthday with a trip to the birthplace of James Bond. There’s no better time than now with summer rates starting at just $448 per night for a Lagoon Suite. If you’re in the mood to party, grab the whole gang for a blow out bash and rent the Fleming Villa with rates starting at $4,400 per night. When not swimming in the turquoise lagoon or lounging on the beach, be sure to chat up Ramsey Dacosta, resident historian of GoldenEye, having worked at the property since the days when Fleming was in residence. He certainly has some good stories to share…
Trade in your martini (shaken, not stirred) for a red stripe and your tuxedo for a new bathing suit and toast to our Commander in Chief’s 103rd birthday!

We all know that Bob Marley is cool – his melodies are the perfect soundtrack for a warm sunny day with a rum punch in hand. What we may not have known is that his coolness may stem from Jamaica itself! CNNGo recently ranked countries by their coolness, and Jamaicans were ranked third coolest nationality in the world. The reggae tunes, the laid back life style, the effortless use of the word, “mon”… all of these things make Jamaicans pretty darn cool. Americans aren’t too far behind (we ranked #5 due to things like rock n roll, surfing, and Hollywood), but if you want to up your coolness factor, head down to Jamaica and kick back the newly opened GoldenEye with a Blackwell Rum cocktail.

Last Wednesday, a Bluefin Tuna sold for a record £250,000 at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan. The sale marks the highest price paid for a single fish since the market began keeping records.
The live tuna auctions are barred to the public (the species is endangered); however, Park Hyatt Tokyo is able to gain access to most of the action for guests who request a private fish market tour with the hotel’s Executive Chef in advance. The market is the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world – and we advise interested guests be morning people. The market officially opens at 3 a.m. with live auctions beginning a little after 5 – all the action is usually over by 7 each morning!

Who knew all cruise ships were fortunate enough to be blessed by a godmother (fairy or mortal) that is responsible for both blessing and christening the ship? While the Vikings marked a ship’s first sailings with a human sacrifice, we now keep it simple by breaking a bottle of champagne on the hull. Crystal Cruises’ three ships have had the classiest of godmothers. Crystal Harmony’s godmother was Mary Tyler Moore, followed by Angela Lansbury for Crystal Symphony, and lastly Dame Julie Andrews for Crystal Serenity. All three distinguished ladies are known for their grace, style, and excellence at what they do– just like the ships themselves!
Other notable godmothers in the cruise industry include: Carnival Legend’s Dame Judi Dench; Disney Wonder’s Tinkerbell; Holland America was feeling a little greedy for Zaandam and has two – both Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen; and finally (and fittingly) Queen Elizabeth II over Queen Mary 2.
